~My Third Concert Experience~

So, on the 29th I saw two bands that are both some of my all time favorites. One band was called Touche Amore, and the other was AFI. I pretty much grew up listening to AFI and I have liked them for a very long time. I got into Touche Amore about a year ago and instantly fell in love. I'll probably write about AFI and Touche Amore the next two weeks when I blog, because this post is going to be all about my experience.

So, the concert was held in Reno, Nevada at The Knitting Factory. This was a bit of a big deal for me, because I live about 2 hours away in Grass Valley, California. And I was also very anxious because the two bands I would see that night are bands that have done so much for me and mean so so so much to me. So I got there around 7, and the opening band (a local band that hailed from Nevada) had finished. I made my way to the front as close as I could get, but people wouldn't let me get closer. So I ended up being on the left side about 4 rows of people away from the front.

I was with my friends Michael and Zach. And we were all freaking out because we all love Touche Amore. And it took like 15 minutes for them to set up because they were having sound problems, which was lame. But they started playing and I was screaming (not like, fangirl screaming. Like actually screaming at the top of my lungs) the lyrics to the first song they played. I forgot what they opened with. And I pretty much screamed (its a hardcore band so those are the kind of vocals they have) all the songs they played except for bits and pieces of the songs I didn't know. And they played a song called "Amends" and towards the end it says "For what it's worth, I'm sorry" and I screamed that and it was just so beautiful. And then their last song in their set they played is one of my favorite songs by them called "Honest Sleep" and I know all the lyrics to that song so I screamed at as loud as I could and it was so great. I have honestly fantasized about doing that for so long. And they played a large amount of songs since they're a small band and kind of don't have a lot. A lot of Touche's other songs are performed with other bands like La Dispute and Make Do and Mend, which I will more than likely end up blogging about at some point.

So, Touche Amore finished and I was so so happy with that. Then, AFI came on and things got a bit crazy. But it was totally worth it. They played almost all of my favorite songs by them, and they played one called "The Leaving Song" and I cried and sang/screamed along. I screamed the lyrics to all the songs they played because I know most of the lyrics to pretty much all of them. And a lot of people were crowd surfing. And Davey (lead singer) kept crowd surfing and it was so rad.

Then at the very end I went to the Touche Amore merch stand and bought a crewneck sweater and a record. And I begged the merch guy to get it signed for me and he did and I literally cried because I love them.

I'll be posting pictures at some point, but I am unable to right now.
I highly recommend at least listening to Touche Amore and AFI, and seeing them in concert.

~The XX~

THE XX

About the Band

The xx is a 3 piece English band that was formed in Wandsworth, London in 2005. They play indie pop music. The band currently consists of:
  • Romy Madley Croft on vocals and guitar
  • Oliver Sim on vocals and bass
  • Jamie Smith on beats and MPC

Discography

The xx has two studio albums.
  • xx (released in August 2009)
  • Coexist (released September 10, 2012)
Personal Experience

I haven't seen seen the xx live, but I do listen to them fairly often. Now, I know I usually post about metal/hardcore/punk/pop punk ish music but I do listen to other music and I have been listening to the xx a lot today and decided that they should be who I blog about today. They're great to listen to when you're (trying to) be calm or are currently calm. I like all of their songs just like I do with pretty much every other band I listen to, but I could choose a few of my favorite songs. I haven't really listened to Coexist a lot, or well. Like I haven't paid attention to what i was listening to, it was just background music. So all of my favorite songs are off of 'xx'.
  •  "Do You Mind"
  • "Intro" (sorry it's extended, it was the only version I could find)
  • "Crystalised" (the school computer won't let me load it..?)

*More Brand New*

So I know I usually do a new band every week but I have been listening to one of Brand New's album lately which is called "Deja Entendu" .  It was released in 2003, and I just never got around to listening to it until recently. For some reason I have just been listening to it constantly for the past week or so. All the lyrics and the way the album sounds to me is just great. So instead of showing you a new band this week I am going to write a bit more about Brand New and show you some of my favorite songs from Deja Entendu. If you haven't read my post about Brand New, here it is .

So as you may have seen, the album was released in 2003 from Triple Crown. This is what the cover looks like

The track list on Deja Entendu is like this

  1. Tautou
  2. Sic Transit Gloria...Glory Fades
  3. I Will Play My Game Beneath the Spin Light
  4. Okay I Believe You, But My Tommy Guns Don't
  5. The Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows
  6. The Boy Who Blocked His Own Shot
  7. Jaws Theme Swimming
  8. Me Vs. Maradona Vs. Elvis
  9. Guernica
  10. Good To Know That If I Ever Need Attention All I Have to Do Is Die
  11. Play Crack The Sky
I honestly love every song on this album and I really don't think I can choose one favorite song. So, I'll just link all the songs and you can listen to whichever ones you want. Now, Google decided to be stupid so I couldn't link The Boy Who Blocked His Own Shot and Guernica. But you should definitely go look them up because those are both great songs.
I still really really reeallllly want to see Brand New live though.
But I figured I should share this album with you since this blog is to help people discover music.

Personal Experience

I first discovered Joyce Manor through tumblr and Pandora. So far I've only listened to the self titled studio album, but I have yet to listen to the other things which I expect to be great. I don't think I'd be able to choose a favorite song. But since I usually do for this blog, I'd have to go with Constant Headache and Beach Community. The lyrics to Constant Headache go like this:

Constant Headache Lyrics
I could hear you coming so I hid by the couch.
You were talking so loudly, I don't know what about.
You were drunker than high school, self-conscious and sweet.
I never ever felt so cool disguised in your sheets.

But I'm a constant headache, a tooth out of line.
They try to make you regret it, you tell them, no not this time.
It's just a constant headache, a dead pet device.
You hang me up, unfinished with the better part of me no longer mine.

And then you finally found me, pretending to sleep.
You said such nice things about me, I felt guilty and cheap.
You took two steps to the kitchen, and just stared at the sink.
I couldn't hold back a smile, I still wish I could have seen you
Having sex in the morning, your love was foreign to me.
It made me think maybe human is not such a bad thing to be.
But I just laid there in protest, entirely fucked.
It's such a stubborn reminder one perfect night's not enough.

It's just a constant headache, a tooth out of line.
They try to make you regret it, you tell them, no not this time.
It's just a constant headache, a dead pet device.
You hang me up, unfinished with the better part of me no longer mine.

And these are the Beach Community Lyrics:

JOYCE MANOR

Beach Community Lyrics
I lost it all in a beach community
Where it was lost is not all that clear to me
Over the sidewalk, into a slow talk
Call the police
Told me I'm in the wrong town

Wait for your cue, 'cause my scene it ain't over
Torch up your house while your kids are at home
What can you do when you're not getting sober?
It's hard to admit but you're always feeling alone
You're always just

A few miles down as the streets count backwards, I realize it's true
Everything reminds me of you

They're definitely on my list of people to see in concert because they are one of my favorites.

Personal Experience

I discovered Brand New through Tumblr towards the end of last year. I kept seeing people re blog their lyrics and pictures and such, so I decided to look them up and I instantly fell in love. I love their style, lyrics. Everything. Sadly, I have yet to see these guys in concert but they are definitely on my list. As far as listening to them goes, I don't necessarily have one particular favorite album but I do have my favorite songs from them. The first one is called "Jesus Christ", and the lyrics go like this:

Jesus Christ, that's a pretty face
The kind you'd find on someone I could save
If they don't put me away
Well, it'll be a miracle

Do you believe you're missin' out
That everything good is happening somewhere else?
But with nobody in your bed
The night's hard to get through

And I will die all alone
And when I arrive I won't know anyone

Well, Jesus Christ, I'm alone again
So what did you do those three days you were dead?
'cause this problem's gonna last more than the weekend.

Well, Jesus Christ, I'm not scared to die,
I'm a little bit scared of what comes after
Do I get the gold chariot?
Do I float through the ceiling?

Do I divide and fall apart?
'cause my bright is too slight to hold back all my dark
And the ship went down in sight of land
And at the gates does Thomas ask to see my hands

I know you're coming in the night like a thief
But I've had some time alone to hone my lying technique
I know you think that I'm someone you can trust
But I'm scared I'll get scared and I swear I'll try to nail you back up (everyone now)

So do you think that we could work out someday
So I'll know it's you and that it's over so I won't even try

I know you're coming for the people like me
But we all got wood and nails
And we turn out hate in factories
We all got wood and nails
And we turn out hate in factories
We all got wood and nails
And we sleep inside of this machine

My next favorite song would be "Degausser" and these are the lyrics:
Goodbye to sleep,
I think this staying up is exactly what I need
Well take apart your head
Take apart the counting, and the flock it has bred

Goodbye to love,
Well it's a ride that'll push you up
Right against the wall
(Right against the wall)
Chew it up and swallow it

You're brought back but you're running
I'll find sleep in the end tonight
I can't shake this little feeling
I'll never get anything right

Goodbye you liar,
Well you sipped from the cup but you don't own up to anything
Then you think you will inspire
Take apart your head
(and I wish I could inspire)
Take apart the demon, in the attic to the left.

(goodbye my love)
You're brought back but you're running
(goodbye my love)
I'll find sleep in the end tonight
(goodbye my love)
I can't shake this little feeling
(goodbye my love)
I'll never say anything right

I'm on my own, never say anything right
I'm on my own, never say anything right
I'm on my own, never say anything right
I'm on my own, never say anything right

Well take me, take me back to your bed
I love you so much that it hurts my head
Say I don't mind you under my skin
I'll let the bad parts in, the bad parts in
When we were made we were set apart
Life is a test and I get bad marks
Now some saint got the job of writing down my sins
The storm is coming, the storm is coming in

You're brought back but you're running
I'll find sleep in the end tonight
I can't shake this little feeling
I'll never get anything right

I'm on my own, never say anything right
I'm on my own, never say anything right

Take me, take me back to your bed
I love you so much that it hurts my head
I don't mind you under my skin
I'll let the bad parts in, the bad parts in
Well you're my favourite bird and when you sing
I really do wish you'd wear my ring
No matter what they say, I am still the king
And now the storm is coming, the storm is coming in

and my last 'favorite' song by Brand New is called "You Won't Know" and these are the lyrics:
ey hey hey! Mr. Hangman,
Go get your rope

Your daughters weren't careful,
I fear that I am a slippery slope
Now even if I lay my head down at night
After a day I got perfectly right

She won't know...
She won't know...
She won't know...

So pray little Kay, love is just God on a good day.
And you can't blame your mother,
She's trying not to see you as her worst mistake
And I wish that I could tell you right now (...I love you)
But it looks like I won't be around
So you won't know...

You won't know...
You won't know...
You won't know...

So believe in me, believe them
You think I'll let you down
Well I won't
They can fire everything they've got
And when you think I'm sunk
I will float on and die
I am fine to put your gun to my life
And know I'm scared it won't fire right

You won't know...
You won't know...
You won't know...

You're never going to feel as full as you felt
So let's go outside and we'll play William Tell
Take your time drawing a bead
I'll stand as still as you need
'Cause you're so good at talking smack,
You heart attack
But you're the apple of my eye anyway

My smiling face that's on my head is on a silver plate.

So they say,
They say in heaven
There's no husbands and wives
On the day that I show up
They'll be completely out
Of their forgiveness supplies
And I cant use the telephone
To tell you that I'm dead and gone
So you won't know

You won't know...
You won't know...
Yeah, You won't know...

I of course love all of their music, but those are some songs I can listen to continuously.

~For All Those Sleeping~

Just a quick introduction, I decided that I am going to put my iPod on shuffle and do the first band that comes up. (unless of course I have al ready blogged about them.)
ABOUT THE BAND

For All Those Sleeping is a metlcore/pop punk band that was established in St. Cloud, Minnesota back in 2007. The band consists of 5 guys.
  • Mike Champa- Vocals
  • London Snetsinger- Bassist/vocals
  • Jared Pierskalla- Guitar/vocals
  • David Volgman-Stevens- Guitar
  • Ethan Trekell- Drums
There is not too much information on them, I have more to say about them personally though.

PERSONAL EXPERIENCE

I actually saw FATS on August 1st over summer at The All Stars Tour. They played with Iwrestledabearonce, Ice Nine Kills, Dayshell, Merchants, Terror, Volumes, Stray From the Path, Chelsea Grin, and Veil of Maya. I hadn't actually listened to For All Those Sleeping until this concert, except for when they did their cover of Taylor Swift's song "You Belong With Me" which appears on "Punk Goes Pop" volume 4. The first song they played live was "Mark My Words" (off of their new album, "Outspoken") which is my favorite song by them. The lyrics are great and so is the song. The reason I like the song (and lyrics) so much is because its the perfect combination of sadness and anger all in one sound, perfect for when you're really pissed off.

                                                                 "Mark My Words"

You're fucked now
Did you think I wouldn't find out
Secrets don't last long in this town
And neither will you
At the rate you burn bridges you will burn out

You are a waste of a life
You are a waste of my time

I'm not the one who made you this way
But I'll be the one to make you wish you never changed

Don't tell me you're sorry
Because I know, oh I know you're not
Don't waste your breath on me
I won't hold mine
Give it away
'Cause you're the reason that you're falling apart
There's no way I'd ever forget you
But mark my words I'll never miss you

You're fucked now
I can see you but you'll never see it coming

You're lower than dirt
And that's where you belong
Face down in the ground
Not making a sound
Someday you'll find that the countless times
You stepped on me were fueling my fire

Come on what are you waiting for
Step up
This is what I've been waiting for
Step Up

Make me move
If you have the guts to
Make your move
I'm standing right here

When I saw them live and they played this song I remember Mike saying (while playing the intro to Mark My Words) "This one is for everyone who has fucked you over" and told everyone to put their middle fingers up and said he didn't care if we were flipping him off. Everyone went insane when they played it.
So then they played "Life On Fire" also from Outspoken, and he had us chant YOUR LIFE ON FIRE! A lot. Which was awesome. And then before playing "Follow My Voice" He gave a speech to the audience about how we were never alone because we will always have music and each other. Of course it was more wordy than that, but that was the main point of the speech, and the song fit his speech perfectly. The lyrics are:

"Follow My Voice"

Hope can seem so hard to find
When all around is falling
And there's never enough light
To see your way out
But in the darkest times
You find out what you're made of
And I swear there's more to you than you know

I don't want to be the voice of a generation
I just want to be a voice for you
Alone we may be lost but together we stand tall

Follow my voice
Let me carry you away
I can see you're broken
But we're all the same
(We're all the same)
Follow my voice
And let me carry you away
I can see you're lost and alone
So let this song guide you

Alone we may be lost but together we stand tall

Scars can be so hard to hide
When all around is flawless
But where we've been makes us who we are
But in the darkest times
You find out what you're made of
And I swear there's more to you than you know

Alone we may be lost but together we stand tall

Follow my voice
Let me carry you away
I can see you're broken
But we're all the same
(We're all the same)
Follow my voice
And let me carry you away
I can see you're lost and alone
So let this song guide you

Alone we may be lost but together we stand tall

I'll let you know
I was like you too
Now every night
I take the stage
I do it for you
So you can let out all the hate
And all the rage inside
Life may never seem right
But well always have tonight

Alone we may be lost but together we stand tall
Alone we may be lost but together we stand tall

Follow my voice
Let me carry you away
I can see you're broken
But we're all the same
(We're all the same)
Follow my voice
And let me carry you away
I can see you're lost and alone
So let this song guide you

Alone we may be lost but together we stand tall

But I am really glad I got to see them live, I would do it again so many times.
